The dog is a Japanese Akita (which looks something like a super fluffy blow-dried German shepherd) and the story is tenuously based on that of a real dog in Tokyo in the 1920s. The story takes place in Tokyo in 1920s to 30s. The story is often called Chuken Hachiko Monogatari (), A faithful dog Hachi and is known as the true story of friendship between a dog and his master. Richard Gere (ageing with such elegance you half-expect him to appear in velvet monogrammed slippers) is a music professor who takes in a lost puppy. Perhaps what made Akita dogs so famous to the world is a tragic story of one Akita dog named Hachi. L asse Hallström dishes up more classy mediocrity with this brazenly uncomplicated treat for dog lovers.
